Start an easy to grow Amaryllis indoors for a dramatic bloom.
Take care of your houseplants.
They need your attention- brown leaf edges indicate dry indoor air which is also an ideal environment for spider mites. Inspect your plants regularily for mealy bugs, (white cottony puffs in the leaf axils),scale, (bumps on the stems and leaves) and fungus gnats(small black flies). Early detection will help control the pest before it gets out of hand.
To increase the humidity around your houseplants, use a moist pebble or gravel tray, double pot - place a small pot into a larger container lined with moist peat moss, group your plants, or provide added humidity with a portable humidifier.
Cyclamen is a great winter bloomer. Given cool temperatures (low 60’s) and bright light, it can bloom as long as 2-3 months.

OUTDOOR GARDENING

In cooler climates. Once the ground is frozen and not covered with snow, add 1-2 inches of mulch around your favorite plants to help insulate the soil and maintain uniform soil temperature. Snow is also a great insulator.
Think green! Recycle that fresh Christmas tree: Spread evergreen branches over your perennials for added winter protection. Otherwise, many cities will pick up discarded Christmas trees at the curb and take them to be recycled into mulch.
